Pharmacy

Pharmacy has always had a great love for music. As a young child I would listen to my mums vinyl albums and drum along banging on the gas fireplace driving both my parents up the wall.

I got into the dance music scene around 1987 when at secondary school I came across house music and acid house. Myself and a mate would go to a tiny 2nd hand record store and buy vinyl’s without hearing them as the store had no listening facilities, get them home and sort the good from the bad. One of my favourite producers at this time was Tyree cooper, I took his album into music class at school and most pupils couldn’t understand this type of music but I wasn’t going to let them influence my opinion as I knew what I liked.

I first started djing around 1990 my first gig was in a pub with a single record player and a tape deck and the first mix tape I ever did was on a 8 track tape deck blending the 1st Enigma album.

I called myself Pharmacy as I wanted people to feel good listening to the sounds I gave them.

Around 1991 I started going to the local nightclub “Concordes” (like most old clubs its long gone with houses now built on the land) and they started having hardcore nights each week. I was lucky enough to get to dj there on several occasions. In these early years I was into techno and then hardcore breakbeats as the music changed.

I got my 1st decks in 1992 for my 18th birthday (respect to Mum & Dad), a pair of brilliant new Technics 1200 mk2 which are still going strong. This really kicked off my collecting of vinyl and I started getting to play out more at local pubs and events, Two of the biggest events I played at were at Weymouth pavilion around 1993 with over 500 people attending.

By now I was well into raving going to different clubs and all-nighters (1st one been Fantazia Summertime). Later as the music started to divide between jungle and happy hardcore I took the path into the jungle and discovered my all-time favourite artist LTJ Bukem of which I have nearly all the material released on his labels.

By the year 2000 I began to get disillusioned with some of the music and CD mixing really didn’t interest me as at the time I was a vinyl purist so I stopped buying new music and would just play from the hundreds of vinyl’s in my collection.

2016 my love for djing returned big time and I got a slot on London Pirate Radio and joined “The Random Rave Show” crew which a close friend had been in for several years. At this time I was still a vinyl only man but on New Year ’s Eve I had my 1st go at digital on some Pioneer 850s (thanks DJ Libatee) and took to it immediately.

I now have a set of Pioneer XDJ 1000mk2 alongside the Technics and love collecting and playing liquid D&B and Oldskool classics.

I’m really grateful to be given a show on the brilliant SunriseFM which I do every other Thursday 8pm-10pm as well as the Random Rave Show alongside mates Libatee, MattyP, Reezay & Dabbsy Saturday 8pm-10pm.

I really do believe that music is one of the greatest gifts we have been given in this life we live.

Thanks

Julian Scamell (DJ Pharmacy)
